Tzu Chi Academy Long Island Celebrates Confucius' Birthday and Teacher's Day by Tony Mok
Recently, Tzu Chi Academy Long Island held a grand celebration for the birthday of Confucius, the Sage Teacher, and Teacher's Day, with the aim of promoting Chinese culture, spreading educational ideals, and paying tribute to all teachers. As the model for all teachers through the ages, Confucius' educational philosophy continues to have a profound impact on education worldwide. This event integrated the Tzu Chi Foundation's Four Missions and Eight Footprints, embodying Tzu Chi's spirit of "compassion and serving humanity," while further enriching the value of education.
The event attracted over 600 participants, including teachers, administrative volunteers, students, class moms/brothers/sisters, and Tzu Shao (Tzu Chi Youth Association US) from the Tzu Chi Academy Long Island. Everyone gathered to celebrate this meaningful occasion in an atmosphere of warmth and enthusiasm.
The event combined Tzu Chi's Four Missions—charity, medicine, education, and humanistic culture —focusing particularly on the core themes of "education" and "humanity." Through various performances and presentations, participants not only commemorated Confucius, the Sage Teacher, but also practiced the spreading of love and kindness under the guidance of Tzu Chi’s Eight Footprints. The event emphasized that "with light in your heart, life will be filled with hope," encouraging everyone to warm themselves and others with compassion while sharing knowledge.
One of the highlights of the celebration was a traditional shadow puppet show that demonstrated Confucius' educational principles. Students brought to life Confucius’ key teachings, such as "education for all without discrimination," "teaching according to ability," "when three walk together, there is always a teacher among them," and "do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire." As the model teacher for all generations, Confucius' educational philosophy was vividly presented through this traditional art form, showcasing the transmission of Chinese culture while aligning with Tzu Chi’s emphasis on humanistic care, reflecting its educational philosophy of "benefiting all beings."
Moreover, students showcased Confucius’ educational philosophy through interactions during the shadow puppet performance. The concepts of "when three walk together, there is always a teacher" and "teaching according to ability" were brought to life, showing the mutual learning and progress between teachers and students. This is in perfect harmony with Tzu Chi’s educational principles, where education is not just about imparting knowledge but also nurturing the heart and mind.
During the Teacher's Day segment of the celebration, students presented handmade cards and small gifts to their teachers and performed carefully prepared cultural programs. In a particularly touching moment, students performed a sign language song titled "Teacher's Grace, Everlasting Grace", using both their hearts and hands to express their gratitude to their teachers. This scene not only conveyed heartfelt appreciation for the teachers but also highlighted the importance Tzu Chi places on humanistic care in its missions.
Additionally, students gifted each teacher an apple and an orange, symbolizing "students flourishing worldwide." The apple represented peace and blessings, while the orange symbolized students' growth and prosperity, expressing deep respect and gratitude for the teachers' selfless dedication. These gifts represent Tzu Chi’s educational philosophy of "teaching with virtue, nurturing with love" and reflect the students' hope to grow into accomplished individuals spread across the world.
The celebration reached its climax with a special recognition of two veteran teachers who have worked tirelessly in the field of Chinese education. Teacher Yi Chen Yang was honored with the 20-Year Overseas Chinese Education Award for her two decades of dedication to Chinese education, and Teacher Shin Ian Yu was awarded the 30-Year Overseas Chinese Education Award for her 30 years of service. Their work not only promotes and preserves Chinese culture but has also nurtured countless outstanding students, contributing significantly to the school’s development and the dissemination of Chinese education. Their dedication and perseverance are a testament to the transmission of Confucius' educational philosophy and the continuation of Tzu Chi’s humanistic spirit. As "every smile is a praise for life," their selfless contributions to education show their deep respect for life and learning.
In his speech, Principal Richard Chuang expressed his gratitude to all the teachers for their unwavering dedication. He emphasized Confucius’ educational philosophy of "education for all without discrimination," which focuses not only on imparting knowledge but also on shaping students' character. He noted that it is the commitment of long-serving teachers like Yi Chen Yang and Shin Ian Yu that allows students to grow into responsible and compassionate global citizens. Principal Chuang also pointed out that Tzu Chi’s Four Missions and Eight Footprints align perfectly with Confucius’ educational ideals, both aiming to cultivate individuals with virtue and a global perspective.
The event concluded in an atmosphere of warmth, laughter, and group photos. This celebration not only deepened the students’ understanding of traditional Chinese culture but also fostered closer emotional bonds between teachers and students. Through this event, Tzu Chi Academy Long Island commemorated the great educator Confucius and further promoted the virtues of respecting teachers, incorporating Tzu Chi’s spirit of gratitude, respect, and love into its educational practice.
In the future, the school will continue to develop its educational programs within the framework of Tzu Chi’s Four Missions, aiming to cultivate more global citizens with a sense of humanistic care and responsibility, contributing more kindness and strength to society.
